This is a re-post from a year ago, but I wanted to add a new twist. This year, I did actually purchase rhubarb and strawberries but I did not tax myself to make something from scratch and overwhelming, I cheated with a box mix. Still kept my toleration in check and let myself of the hook. I seem to be learning this lesson… Read below to learn more.
Michigan Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie (Originally Posted in June 2017)
June in Michigan brings fresh strawberries…tiny and flavorful as nature intended. And lots of fresh rhubarb. It was early in our relationship that Cary told me his favorite is Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie. What luck!! I’m a good farm girl from Iowa and I can sweeten-up rhubarb with the best of ‘em. I have a recipe box full of tasty rhubarb recipes. In fact, I have a Strawberry-Rhubarb buttery, sugary, crisp that will make your toes curl.
Wow….Cary would be a lucky guy….would be…..if in our 6 years together…..I had actually baked him some Strawberry-Rhubarb goodness. Yet…I haven’t. Every June, I tell myself that this…is…THE …year…..this is the year that I start every June…a tradition of Strawberry-Rhubarb. And every June passes by with me beating myself up all month because I don’t get around to this and then the Michigan strawberries and rhubarb are long gone….
So, what is going on here? I could coach myself to death on this. Is there not a compelling enough reason for me to bake? Is there a distraction in my way from baking one pie a year? On and on. But, the biggest thing is what happens when I don’t bake every June…..I create a toleration for a whole month. What does that mean? It means I tell myself at the first sight of FRESH MICHIGAN STRAWBERRIES & RHUBARB HERE sign that I want to do this. Then…every time I see that sign again and I don’t do it….I create a weight. I beat myself up for a few minutes after I drive buy. The weight of wanting to do it and not being able to find time weighs on me and distracts me from being fully present. You know that feeling….when you are trying to complete the work task that you need to get done….the reason you don’t have time to bake…..and there you are…..in the middle of the work task…..thinking about baking. Ugh!
This year…again…I got to the last week of June!! ENOUGH!!! Enough of dealing with this toleration. I took myself up to the beautiful fruit stand a mile from my house. Summer fruit stands might be the #1 reason to live in Michigan by the way….for sure in the top 5. And….I purchased a homemade Michigan Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie….still warm even.
I’d like to say that Cary was super excited and over the moon about it but honestly…I think I was the most excited because I finally ended a 6-year toleration. Weight lifted. Phew!!
